UNITED WAY BENGALURU: AN NGO WORKING ON RESTORING, REVIVING AND REJUVENATING LAKES
Based on the study published on the Urban water Atlas website, Bangalore was once known as the ‘city of lakes’ and had around 285 lakes in the 18th Century. Today, the local government recognizes only 81 lakes, with merely 34 lakes considered as ‘live lakes’.
United Way Bengaluru actively participates in lake restoration, revival and rejuvenation projects. United Way Bengaluru (UWBe) has been spearheading the Wake the Lake Campaign since its launch in 2011, aiming at restoring the lost water bodies in the city. We undertake lake rejuvenation projects in and around Bengaluru which had over thousands of lakes a few decades back.
Since the inception of the campaign UWBe has collaborated with Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), Gram Panchayats, minor irrigation department and others. Over the last decade, Wake the Lake has successfully reclaimed and restored over 50 lakes, which were on the verge of collapsing completely.
