On going Programs

Within the defined verticals, United Way of Bengaluru is developing “Programs” to raise community standards. The current Programs are :

Blindness Relief. A program is being evolved to cover
• Cataract operations for the rural poor
• Preventive eye-care for under-privileged children
• Pledging corneas for transplanting
• Developing software to manage eye banks
• Developing / implementing “text-to-speech” software to enable blind engineers to seek employment with IT companies

Clubfoot Treatment. A program is being evolved to cover
• Children in the age group of 0 to 6 years
• 1,500 patients per year to be operated and cured entirely
• Make Karnataka totally free of Clubfeet
• Biggest such program in the world

Health Broadcasts. A program is being evolved to cover
• Healthcare related awareness amongst the rural women
• Hygiene related awareness amongst rural families
• Inputs on nutrition for women and children in rural settings
Social Informatics. A program is being evolved to cover
• Mobile and internet alerts for :
   - Children vaccinations
   - Pre and Post natal women’s issues
   - Diabetes
   - Others
• Informatics to support all other United Way Programs through technology
  deployment
Education for the Under-privileged. A program is being evolved which :
• Would support education for all under-privileged
• Give an opportunity to students and teachers from top international universities to    develop curriculum and teach the under-privileged
• Support the under-privileged through :
   - Vaccinations
   - Dental support
   - Eye care
   - Heart care
   - Computers
   - Books
   - Mobile science labs
Vocational Training. A program is being evolved to cover
• Youth of 18 years and above, with little or no education
• Significant earnings, with just 3 months of vocational training
• 100 % job placements for all students undergoing training
Environment Initiative. A program is being evolved to cover
• Planting and trans-planting of trees keeping in mind :
   - Survival issues
   - Water preservation
   - Ornithological considerations
   - Attractive canopy
   - Dust prevention

Each of the Programs is “owned” and “driven” by a Member of the Board.

It is always the effort of UWBe to strive for integration within the Programs. Thus, for example, UWBe would facilitate strategic alliances between the institutions it supports for education for the under-privileged, with the institutions it supports that provide vocational training. Social informatics would be deployed to support both, and both would be encouraged to support the Environment Programs and initiatives. A particular emphasis would be kept on the healthcare needs of these institutions.

Going forward, UWBe would continue to research and build up a bank of causes worthy of support, converting them into integrated Programs in time to come. This would be done through the application of processes and best practices, in an efficient and transparent fashion.
