SPARSH VACHANA, A SPARSH Hospital Initiative

Supported by United Way of Bengaluru (UWBe), as one of the partners

SPARSH Foundation conceived SPARSH VACHANA (a Vow to provide quality medical care to poor children) an ambitious plan that demanded huge skills, great commitment, enormous effort and a sublime meeting of minds.  The plan was to organize a week-long surgical event to operate upon 200 economically-underprivileged children with complex Orthopaedic problems.

Dr. Sharan Patil, Chairman and Chief of Orthopaedic Services, SPARSH Hospital, the man behind this truly inspirational and landmark initiative to provide world class Orthopaedic surgeries to the poorest of the poor Children in the country, left no stones unturned. He mobilized a team of international (United States of America and United Kingdom) and Indian doctors that included Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeons, Paediatric Anaesthetists, Nurses and Therapists -- a total of 30 specialists. The team worked round the clock in shifts and conducted operations on the children from the 19th – 25th   of October, 2009.

UWBe, realizing the need, plunged into action to mobilize resources in cash and kind to support SPARSH Vachana. Mr. Vivek Nagarkatti, Chairman of the Board of UWBe, believes that passionate citizens like Dr. Sharan Patil should be encouraged whole heartedly by the Civil Society.

In a span of just thirty days UWBe reached out to hundreds of people to mobilize resources. One of our Board Members, Ms. Jessy Jacob is proud to say that “not even a single person turned down her request to support SPARSH VACHANA”. A total of US$ 30,000 was generated in one month’s time in Cash and Kind locally to support SPARSH VACHANA. The collected amount went towards surgery cost of children.
